Smile!

A good example to think about photographs in a simple and uncomplicated way is McCaughrean's (2004) book Smile! which is written for a young au! dience (7-11 years). The author explores what it means to take pictures if there are only ten shots left on a camera. What subject should one choose? Flash (the main character of the book) faces this task. The only thing he has with him after a plane crash in the desert is a cheap instant camera with a half-used film. The story is simple, but put together with flair and humour. The writing is
luminously graphic and is totally in keeping with the story. The book is also thought-provoking. Readers are asked to re-evaluate their world view. What does, for example, beautiful mean. Is it simple the image of a girl with blond hair and blue eyes? McCaughrean (2004) ! has written over 140 books (see http://www.geraldinemccaughrean.co.uk/about.htm) mostly for children or young adults. She is not a photographer but her book Smile! is certainly worth reading when reflecting on photography and its impact our perception of the world.
